What is the modem?

Hello geeks,

This is a big question for beginners. Experienced people will laugh, but this is a very powerful tool, when you use it right.

Hackers are using this for hiding their tracks. But what is it and what it does?

It's a module that uses the telephone line to connect to a server, or to the Internet.

It's like an old phone with no reciever to pick up. It does the same things a normal phone does.

It dials numbers and it receives data in exchange, like bytes and megabytes. Not a simple voice call.

So, it connects you to the internet via a telephone line.

Types of modems

There are two types of modems. Internal modems and external modems. The internal modems are old and few people are using it in this modern tech age.

The external modems are the hope for the future.

Internal modems

Very useful back in the 90's when the desktop computers had the power. The Internet was just at start and we didn't know about mobile computing.

You just put this into your computer back then, inserted a phone line, dial the number that your ISP gave you and connect to the Internet at measly speeds.

External modems

The evolution of modems. Today, they are literally transformed into routers. They have the same function of dialing numbers, but because they are external, they can be used in different ways.

Those devices have a modem role and a router role as well. They do what a modem does but what also a router does.

These modems use the telephone line and the optic fiber + the normal network cable to deliver the Internet at high speeds

Many ISP's are using it to deliver their services nowadays. A practical way to share the Internet to the entire house, cheaply.

Conclusion

Modems are great tools to hide your traces if you want to. Like this modem.

You can also do fax through them, get voice calls, do voice calls, stream music and videos and it's good if you live in the woods with just a telephone line.

You can connect via a modem, to the Internet, without having trouble to install an urban network.
